The use of ‘niche’ in this sense refers to a gap or break in mainstream market where a demand for particular goods or services is not supplied for. Thus, niche marketing pertains to supplying for a demand not catered to by the mainstream, bigger markets. Ventures in niche markets have a relatively straightforward advantage over engaging in the mainstream markets: though the demand for the particular goods or services is low enough to merit no reaction from bigger suppliers, it’s still a good market for a couple of small-time suppliers. So long as the demand exists and no one else answers to it, profit is certain. Though there are bound to be some competition sooner or later, it would not be as fierce as with mainstream markets.

The challenge faced by those wanting to engage in niche marketing is getting an idea about what niche to settle into. For those thinking of a good niche market to take advantage of, it’s more of a matter of searching for one rather than thinking of one. And also, one can always go into niche markets where some suppliers have settled into, he just needs to be certain not to ‘crowd the niche’ and suffocate not only his competitor’s business, but his own. And it would also be a good idea to have a long term plan in case the market niche is filled in or gets absorbed into mainstream markets.
